Rich Schefren – Business Guru to the Gurus and my #1 business mentor says,
“In business, different trumps better.”
In other words, daring to do something truly
different (and even a little controversial) in
your business and your marketing…
Will always beat out your competitors who are just
trying to do the same old thing a little bit better.
This one really resonated with me. In my 20 plus years of business and marketing consulting I’ve seen numerous business owners get caught in the trap of perfectionism. They tweak and re-tweak a marketing piece or a product all the while customers walk by their door and buy from the guy (or gal) next door who is simply ‘Doing it’.
Waiting until it’s perfect is a fools task. It will inevitably end in complete failure. Guaranteed.
How can I say that? Because perfection is a myth. Any product, service or business is under a constant state of change. It’s either growing or dying. So, the key is just starting – putting it out there and then refining as you go.
In their landmark book, In Search of Excellence, Tom Peters and Bob Waterman coined the phrase, “If it ain’t broke, fix it anyways!”
It goes hand in hand. There is no such thing as being done – or being perfect. It’s all about –
Kaizen – Japanese for “improvement”, or “change for the better”.
So, I encourage you, if you have an idea – a new product, a new marketing piece. Just begin it – put it out there and refine as you go. To end I’ll leave you with one more fav of mine, a quote –
‘Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, the providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets:
Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!’
from W. H. Murray – The Scottish Himalaya Expedition, 1951.
